Tutorial seven: Assistive Technology

Provide a definition of Assistive technology: "Any item, piece of equipment or product system whether acquired commercially off the shelf, modified of customised that is used to increase or improve functional capabilities of individuals with disabilities" Cook & Hussey 2000

Describe one piece of equipment introduced in the assistive technology tutorial:
One piece of equipment I thought was pretty cool was the Go talk 20, it can store up to 20 message buttons (2.8cm square) – 8 seconds each

Five recording levels

14.75 minutes of recording time

105 message capacity

Five “core message” keys – 12 seconds each

Great sound quality

Built-in overlay storage

Faster record and erase

Built-in keyguard

Digital volume control

Built-in handle

Lightweight (650g)

Size 23cm x 30.5cm x 2.86cm (9” x 12” x 1.125”)

Uses 2 x AA batteries

It costs around $380

How does your chosen piece of equipment increase functional capacity for the user?

It allows the person to communicate with others and feel part of things and that they too can have an opinion or an idea. Just simple things like hello how are you for a child who hasnt been able to communicate before could be a huge stepping stone in making friends and boosting self esteem.

Tutorial six the internet and online communities

Provide the web address and the name of the community you are investigating?
www.facebook.com

What is the brief or focus of this community?
The focus of this community is a site for friends to stay in touch and share photos or information, you have control over how much other users can see.

What services are provided? How interactive is this site? How can people contribute?
Facebook is like a blog, you can share your thoughts and opinions and upload photos and videos for friends to see. You have control over who can see what on your page by adjusting the privacy settings, so only your friends can see your page. You can approve or ignor friend requests, and you can write on your friends pages or when they are online and you are too you can chat through facebook chat, you can also send images online. you can also access facebook on your mobile so you can update it 24/7. There are also lots of gaming applications and other intrest sites you can add.

Consider material presented during the lecture and make comment on why people choose to contribute to this community. What is it they are seeking?
People are seeking friendship and to reconect with those whom they may have lost touch, it is an easy an accessable way to communicate with others.

Cut and paste an example of the type of topics being discussed.

Considering material presented during the course and make comment on the potential ethical issues that may arise in this community.
Provacy is a big one as when you sign up you automatically go into the default privacy setting so if you dont change this yourself anyone can see your profile, your pictures and all your private information and you could end up with a stalker from another country or have people try and hack your account.

Consider material presented during the lecture and make comment on the benefits this community holds over traditional notions of community.
Facebook is an easily accessable website where friends and family can stay in touch and communicate where without it they might not communicate at all or very little due to if they are living in different countries, using facebook it doesnt matter where in the world you are you can keep in contact.

Consider material presented during the lecture and make comment what this community lacks or can not provide which traditional communities can?
I feel that with eveyone on the internet and cellphones now, no one writes or calls anymore and the younger generation are growing up without it and it soon may be gone. The general face to face communication and contact with people doesnt happen as often.

Tutorial four and five

This week we are creating a you tube account where we are uploading a 30 second film we have made in groups. This was a rather hard task! but we got there in the end and you should find my groups clip on my blog here :)

Provide a brief summary of the service offered by youtube?
You tube is a video sharing website on which users can upload share and view videos.

Provide a brief account on how the use of planning, storyboarding and scripting aided your groups short film.
Well thanks to phillipa who had planned out an awesome idea for our clip we had it all written down into sections and areas where we would record the shots, this helped as we were able to shoot in sequence which saved us some time editing! without the planning and storyboard we would have gotten lost and had no idea what we were doing or where exactly we were going with our shooting of footage.

Tutorial three, Blog Creation Tasks

Tutorial Two: Digital Camera use and appliations

"A new Technology is rarely superior to an old one in every feature" briefly discuss this statement in relation to digital camera technology. What ould you consider to be some of the pluses and minuses digital camera technology holds in relation to more traditional film based cameras?
Some of the pluses for digital cameras are that they are light weight and small in size, come in a variety of colours and have different settings and attachments for different purposes. Theres no need to change the film as there isnt one, you have the ability to see the picture and take a beter shot.
However with a digital camera if something were to go wrong it would cost alot to fix, no longer the need to print photos as they can all be uploaded to the computer which can see the dimise of the photo album.

List some of the ways that digital images can be stored transferred and manipulated using other communications technology?
Images are automatically saved onto a memory chip in the camera, these can be transferred onto a computer or laptop by putting it into the SD slot. Also images can be emailed or transferred ontodiscs, memory sticks, internet sites.
Digital images can be altered like on such programmes as photoshop.

Given the prevelance of image capturing devices, and thinking about the issues discussed in tutorial one, consider what sort of ethical issues may arise with their use?
Privacy, taking photos of someone or something without getting permission or consent.
Confidentiality of where the photos are ending up.

Briefly discuss some of the ways that digital images could or are being used in occupational therapy practice?
Showing the client correct technique or use of equipment.
images to show evidence of clients improvement or lack there of
A way in which to record a session with a client to review.

Provide a brief summary of the services offered by Flickr.com
Flickr is a website where you can upload and share photos with people. It is free to create an account and upload photos.

Name one other photo storage website which offers services simmilar to Flickr.com?
Photobucket.com

Explain what the difference is between digital an optical zoom?
Digital zoom is where the camera crops and enlarges the part of the photo you are trying to zoom in on. So it's not really a zoom, its just an enlargement.
Optical zoom is 'ajusting the lens' to get closer.

What is meant by the term megapixle?
A megapixle is one million pixles, pixles are tiny tile like colours that all blend together to make the image.

The following photos are some uploaded from Flickr
